Acoustics characteristics of open transition in nonnative consonant cluster production

چکیده

In cross-language speech production, nonnative consonant clusters are often modified by epenthetic or transitional vocoids. Focusing on English speakers’ productions of nonnative stop-initial clusters (e.g., /bn/, /bd/), the present study identified several acoustic characteristics that distinguish cases of epenthesis from accurate cluster realizations. Both modified and accurate productions contained an open transition between the initial stop and following consonant, but epenthesis transitions had longer durations and other properties indicating greater vocal tract opening. Time course analyses revealed that the acoustic markers of epenthesis were present throughout the transition but became more pronounced following stop burst/frication. The acoustic measures studied here are simple, largely automatic, and provide a means to supplement or replace hand-coding of cluster production accuracy with statistical classification. The combination of semi-automatic measurement and machine learning makes the phonetic study of nonnative cluster production more objective and scalable, and could be extended to the investigation of transitional vocoids more generally.

Optimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*

This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...

Effects of visual speech information on native listener judgments of L2 consonant intelligibility

The present study examines how visual information in nonnative phonemes affects perceptual accuracy of second language (L2) speech production. Native Canadian English listeners perceived three English phonemic contrasts produced by native speakers of Japanese as well as native speakers of Canadian English as controls, under audiovisual (AV), audioonly (AO), and visual-only (VO) conditions. The ...

Syllable structure in Old, Middle and Modern Persian: A contrastive analysis

Evolution of languages has always been of interest to linguists.  In this paper we study  the natural progress of the syllable structure from Old  Persian  (O.P)  to Middle Persian (Mi.P) and up to the Modern Persian (Mo.P). For this purpose all the words containing consonant sequences are collected from specific sources of each  of these  languages,  and then  analysed  according to the syllab...

Production and perception of Vietnamese final stop consonants /p, t, k/

The bursts and voiced formant transitions are well known as separate cues to the place of articulation of initial stop consonant. The Vietnamese presents three final voiceless stop consonants /p, t, k/ without bursts. It is an opportunity to study these final stop consonants and to compare their characteristics with those of the corresponding initial stop consonants. This paper analyses these f...

Analysis and synthesis of fricative consonants

This thesis studies and interprets the -entory of acoustic events associated with the changing vocal-tract configurations .:at characterize fricatives preceding vowels. Theoretical considerations of the articulatory, aerodynamic and acoustic aspects of the production of fricatives provide the foundation for interpreting the acoustic data. Fricative characteristics are considered with respect to...
